We (zcat(1) and Teh LINZ) run a pair of Tremulous game servers in Hamilton, sharing space with an Asterix VoIP server on a 1U SuperMicro box under Ubuntu Feisty.

The map directory is shared so the same 150+ maps are available by vote on both servers. Both servers run boscq's patched svn1024 server and game.qvm with tjw-vms-911M-3.pk3 client-side assets. Kiwi#1 runs fairly standard tremulous. Kiwi#0 will be used to test out various mods and cvar settings that we want to experiment with.

Any suggestions for improving this service can be posted on the message boards, where they will be ignored and/or publically ridiculed.

"Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...

"Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the "Armoury". The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.

"The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures."

zcat(1) has packaged the default maps and tjw build as an .exe installer tremulous-tjw-installer.exe. tjw's backport is much nicer than the standard 1.1.0 build; it includes GUID code, admin commands, and numerous bugfixes.

If you're brave, you might also want to play with the svn1024 client in the files area

You should definately turn on autodownload (ESC menu > options > Auto Download) so the server can give you the tjw pk3 and any maps you don't have. Maps are typically only 5M or smaller and should download in less than a minute on DSL.
